What is Sky Protect?
Sky Protect is insurance cover offered to Sky customers against accidental damage and breakdown of Sky devices. Also known as Sky Protect Device Insurance, the cover ensures Sky customers get unlimited replacements and repairs.
Sky customers eligible to take up Sky Protect Device Insurance can choose to cover up to 8 devices including their Sky equipment. The cover is provided by Domestic and General, one of the UK’s leading appliance care specialists.
The cover is available for laptops, mobile phones, tablets, TVs and certain game consoles. Basically, your devices must cost less than £2000, when new and in good working condition. In the case of mobile phones, they must be no more than 3 years to qualify for Sky Protect.
As previously mentioned, when you get Sky Protect or Sky Protect Device Insurance, you’re covered for as many repairs or replacements you need. If the engineers cannot fix the problem, then Sky will replace it at no extra cost.
When making a claim on a mobile phone, a £75 excess fee applies. When it comes to other devices covered by Sky Protect, there’s no excess fee to pay.
How Much Does It Cost?
In the third quarter, Sky’s sales plunged almost 15% largely due to a weaker pound and a continuing cost of living crisis in the UK. To remain competitive, Sky started selling Sky Protect.
It’s understood that Sky started selling the insurance product as a way of branching from its TV business. This is largely due to the fierce competition from streaming rivals such as Netflix.
The cover, now dubbed Sky Protect Device Insurance, will be underwritten by Zurich UK. It will be available as a standalone insurance product designed to capture Britain’s £7 billion home insurance market.
So, how much does Sky Protect cost?
From £9 a month, Sky will insure your Sky equipment and another device such as a laptop, tablet, gaming console, mobile or TV. If you’re a Sky Q customer, besides covering your Sky equipment, the company will cover two additional devices instead of one.
If you want to cover more devices, you’ll have to pay £3 a month for each device. What you need to know is that the only time that your premiums may increase is when you renew your policy or when you add more devices.
